Items You Need In Your Closet: Bodysuit Edition

As personal stylists, there aren’t many things we recommend everyone to have. We don’t do this because everyone’s style is so personal and unique to them that to say all our clients need this one article in their closet doesn't make sense. However, there are a few pieces we break the rules for. One of them being the bodysuit. Since the bodysuit has come back in style, there have been many variations and styles available, which makes it the perfect piece to recommend to almost anyone depending on the occasion. We suggest bodysuits because of the clean, smooth finish it provides as a tucked shirt. There’s little to no bulk when tucked, especially when tucked into something like a skirt. We are going to go through the different types of bodysuits you should consider adding to your wardrobe.

Shells

Shells are a must in closets if you like to layer. A thick, body contouring, compressing bodysuit is always the way to go when creating an outfit with baggier, less structured outerwear. Brands like Express and Good American have some of the best body contouring body suits for layering. We always recommend something more fitted underneath looser silhouettes because it allows you to not lose the shape of the body underneath. If the super fitted look isn’t your thing, then a standard work shell like we see below as a bodysuit will have less bulk when tucked in.

Everyday tops

Another great bodysuit style addition to your closet is in the form of everyday tops. Whether it’s a simple, cute, casual top or a standard t-shirt, a bodysuit style will tuck into any bottom seamlessly. You want to think of bodysuits as an extension of your wardrobe. They should still fall in line with your personal style and effortlessly mesh with your aesthetic. Even for your everyday tops, don’t go below a certain quality. Because these kinds of pieces stretch, you’ll want to choose fabrics that are thicker and higher quality.

Blouses

A bodysuit blouse is a game changing piece in your wardrobe. Have you ever wanted to tuck in a basic white button-up or flowy printed blouse into a skirt and have too much bulking? Well, with a bodysuit style, that shouldn’t be a problem. Because the bottom portion is fitted like underwear to the body, you end up having smooth lines underneath your bottoms with a perfect foldover from the blouse over the waistband. Again, think of these as functional, yet stylish add-ons to your current wardrobe. These pieces should integrate easily with other pieces.

Mesh & Lace

You can of course wear mesh and lace bodysuits on their own, but where they really shine is going to be underneath things that are sleeveless like vests, dresses, and jumpsuits. Because of its one-piece style, they are the perfect option for creating the edgy layering moment of your dreams. And if mesh and lace feel too outside your style zone, opting for a solid color, long sleeve turtleneck, can create a similar vibe.

In the world of personal styling, where individuality reigns supreme, there are few pieces that transcend personal taste to become universally recommended. The bodysuit is one such exception. Its versatility and ability to provide a sleek, polished look make it a must in any wardrobe. From layering shells to everyday tops and functional blouses, the bodysuit seamlessly integrates into diverse styles. Whether maintaining shape to loose silhouettes or creating seamless tucks for your ensembles, the bodysuit remains a timeless essential, embodying effortless style and versatility.
